Hybrid, plug-in or electric.
On a used Toyota, the first question is what kind of powertrain it has. It changes the price, the maintenance and what you check at the viewing.
Self-charging hybrid
A petrol engine and an electric motor, with a small battery that charges while driving and braking. No plug. It's the most common version of the Yaris, Corolla, C-HR, RAV4, Auris and Prius.
The body usually says "Hybrid". On the RAV4, "AWD-i" means all-wheel drive with an electric motor on the rear axle.

- Emissions: CO₂ and Euro standard
- Service history: the services found, with the date and mileage
A hybrid system test at a garage with a Toyota diagnostic tool. On many models, also ask about the filter of the fan that cools the battery.
How much the car has been used.
Many Toyota hybrids were bought for heavy use: taxis, ride-hailing, fleets. High mileage isn't a problem in itself, but it has to show in the price and the car's condition. Start with the yearly average.
About the mileage check →In line with a private car. Still check that the readings in the history rise steadily, without drops.
The thresholds are guides, not a rule. The average doesn't show how the mileage built up: the report shows the actual readings, each with its date.
In the report you see the readings on a chart, each with its date. That shows whether the mileage rose steadily or dropped at some point.
Where to find each answer.
Some answers are in the car's history. The rest you get from a garage or a dealer, before you pay.
Generations, by chassis code.
Toyota names its generations with codes, used in parts catalogues and on forums. The year and model in the report show your car's generation.
- XP1302011–2020
- XP2102020–
The XP210 is built on a new platform with a new hybrid system. Both generations were built in France for Europe.
- E1502006–2012
- E1802012–2018
In Europe, the Auris was replaced by the Corolla in 2019. The E180 generation also had a hybrid version.
- E2102019–
The Auris's successor in Europe. The Corolla E210 comes as a 1.8 and a 2.0 hybrid, at different prices.
- AX102016–2023
- AX202023–
The second generation also comes as a plug-in. Confirm the powertrain before comparing prices.
- XA402013–2018
- XA502019–
The XA50 comes as a hybrid, with front-wheel drive or AWD-i, and as a plug-in. Diesel only appears on older generations.
- XW302009–2015
- XW502016–2022
- XW602023–
In Europe, the XW60 generation is sold as a plug-in. Older Priuses often have high mileage.
Emissions, from the report.
CO₂ and the Euro standard matter for taxes and access to low-emission zones. A hybrid usually has lower values than a conventional engine of the same power, and a plug-in's official CO₂ figure is much lower.
